If you only have one day in Belize it would be a good idea to get up early. There are so many amazing things to see there. Belize is the perfect destination for travelers looking to experience the jungle, both above and below water. You can also enjoy the sand and surf of a Caribbean beach. If you are looking to do something entirely different, and get a true idea of the real Belize you must visit Dangriga and Hopkins. Dangriga is known as Belize’s Culture Capital. . Hopkins is a quaint village few miles the road on the way south.
Mayan Ruins
The Mayan Ruins are one of the main Belize attractions and make the country stand out from other destinations. Altun Ha is one of our favorite excursions. It’s best to take a tour by bus as it is a ways away. It’s not as dramatic as some of the sites in Mexico and Guatemala, but still worth the visit. The area was once the very center of the ancient Maya Civilization. You can see the remains of the once great Mayan civilization along with the treasures which were found deep within the caves in the mountainside.
One of northern Belize’s most popular tourist destinations, Altun Ha dates back to 300 BC. This is an active archaeological site—the Maya still lived there as recently as 150 years ago. Visitors will find towering temples and heaps of rubble along a self-guided hike. It’s also worth visiting for historical context: Altun Ha reveals insights into an advanced civilization that thrived in Central America centuries before European explorers arrived on these shores.
Belize is one of Central America’s most culturally diverse countries. This makes it a great place to try new foods, explore ancient ruins, and get an authentic view of what life is like outside of resorts. Soak up some culture by exploring one of these five Mayan ruins located in Central America: Lamanai, Copán Ruinas, Tikal, Dzibanche, and Xunantunich.
Relax on the beach in Hopkins
A beach town located in South Central Belize, Hopkins features gorgeous beaches and pristine waters. The town itself is still fairly undeveloped, meaning you’ll have little trouble finding activities to fill your day. Spend time on a hammock, snorkel off one of Hopkins’ many reefs or relax while floating down one of its beautiful rivers. And when you need a break from all that relaxation, explore Mayan ruins like Altun Ha and Xunantunich.
Swim with dolphins and kayak on the Monkey River
Starting from Placencia Village, you can explore a variety of destinations by water. The best way to travel around Placencia is via boat, kayak or canoe. You can easily rent these from any local water taxi company for your day excursions. Just be sure to bring along a life jacket and plenty of water for yourself! This trip will give you an opportunity to get away from all of your cares. Just think about nothing but relaxing on one of Belize’s pristine tropical beaches.
