Campeche, Mexico or as locals call it San Francisco de Campeche is one of the most scenic cities in Mexico. Known for their UNESCO World Heritage site status, this city is a pleasure to explore. This city is one of the most rich with Spanish and Mayan history in the Gulf of Mexico.
In this city you can find the ancient Mayan city of Ak-Kim-Pech, which was the place Spanish “conquistadores” arrived in 1517. Just a 20-minute drive from the center and you can find the ruins of Edzna, a Mayan structure founded around 400 B.C.
Campeche Night Life
On Friday nights, it’s salsa night, as the city comes alive with live music, just be around the famous “Calle 59” and you will arrive at a lively outdoor salsa party. If you love food, you can experience private dining with a world-renowned chef, Patrick Cross. Casa de los Murmullos is his restaurant and here you can enjoy haute French cuisine with a Mexican/Mayan accent.
If you like watching the sunset, take a stroll on the 4.4 mile boardwalk, or how locals call it, the Malecon. This boardwalk cradles the Bay of Campeche. Be sure to visit the Old Town, which features very colorful outer walls and fortifications.
In Campeche you can also visit the Museum of Mayan Architecture, look at the ocean from San Miguel’s Fort or go watch the Pirate Light Show at Puerta de Tierra.
