Your cruise stop in Chester will introduce you to one of the most famous sailors of all time. Chester, Illinois, is located in the Mississippi River Valley and is the home to Popeye. The “Popeye & Friends Character Trail” is a trail in progress. There are statues of Popeye characters in various locations throughout the city. It is whimsical, fun and long overdue, at least in my opinion. You can obtain a map of the statues so you don’t miss any or just “stumble” upon them through your day of traveling around.
Right along the river you may want to start the day with a walk at Smith’s Landing. This park has picnic tables, views of the river and boats. Not far away you will find the remains of Fort Kaskaskia. This was built by the French to protect them from the British during the French & Indian War.
You should visit the Randolph County Court House, which is a very large stone building built in 1864. It is now a museum displaying artifacts of the original French settlers. It gives a good picture of the people and history of the area. The Great River Road offers a real glimpse into the past thousands of years. Indian artifacts are on display throughout the trail.
Sight Seeing in Chester
Don’t forget to visit Mary’s Covered Bridge. The number of covered bridges is dwindling in the country and this one is pristine and scenic. Definitely a picture opportunity.
Depending upon the time of year you visit, you may be lucky enough to attend one of the annual events of the city. The Annual Popeye Picnic, Fall Festival and Christmas on the River are major events drawing in large crowds. The citizens of Chester take their participation in these events very seriously.
All in all I think you will enjoy your time in his historic part of Illinois.
