Because of it’s location Cape Town, South Africa isn’t on many cruise itineraries. If you are lucky enough to be going on one of the cruises that does stop there, you are in for a treat. Cape Town is a lovely coastal city and the second most populated area in South Africa. It also serves as the capital of the Western Cape Province. As a tourist, there is no lack of things to do, in fact, you may end up wishing that you have more time. You’ll find outdoor activities, historical landmarks, museums, cultural tours and plenty of food and nightlife that you must check out. Here are some of the top attractions to consider:
Victoria & Alfred (V&A) Waterfront
The V&A Waterfront is full of activity at all hours. It was built by Queen Victoria’s son, Alfred, and has served as a European port for centuries. Now it caters to tourists and you can find performers and a wide array of shopping and restaurants that you can enjoy while taking in beautiful views. You may want to consider leaving the port and taking a whale watching tour at Robben Island.
Two Oceans Aquarium
If you have children with you (and even if you don’t!) and are taking in the sites at the V&A, it is well worth it to check out Two Oceans Aquarium. Be sure you take the time to explore the wildlife diversity and hands on activities amongst the various houses where more than 3,000 creatures live. You will find penguins, turtles and you can even take a dip in the shark tank!
If you’re looking for something a bit more unusual, consider one of the most unique activities around, and only found in a few cities (of course, Cape Town) – Secret Sunrise! Secret Sunrise events take place early in the mornings and you can find the various locations by Facebook or the Secret Sunrise website. When you arrive, you’ll be given wireless headphones and you’re free to dance, sing or just enjoy the views.
