Maybe you’re spending some time in Sorrento or Naples. Perhaps you’ve been contemplating taking a day trip to the island of Capri. Well, that’s definitely not a bad idea. In fact, it’s such a great idea, you might decide to take a couple of day trips to the beautiful home of the Blue Grotto, just to soak in all it has to offer.
Capri is located in Italy off the Sorrentine Peninsula. It is a beautiful Italian Island in the Mediterranean. One great activity to take up a full day is a boat tour around the island. Boat tours depart from Marina Granda and pass by very beautiful scenery. Pick any tour that suits your fancy, and you’ll most likely get to experience that infamous cave where the light bounces off the turquoise colors of the water, resulting in a stunning, glowing blue ambient light that will amaze you. Of course, this is the Blue Grotto.
The boat tour will likely take a couple of hours, which will probably bring you to lunchtime. The Isle of Capri actually consists of two towns, Capri and Anacapri. Anacapri is a great place to stop for lunch. Anacapri, situated at the top of the island, is slow and easygoing, and you can get there by bus or taxi. When you arrive, have lunch at a cozy spot like L’Angolo Del Gusto, or enjoy the raviolli caprese at La Taberna degli Amici.
An after-lunch stroll is always a wise move, and it’s also a wonderful way to explore Anacapri. Make your way to the chair lift, which will take you up to the top of Mt. Solaro, the highest point on the island. When you come back down, you can tour Villa San Michele, with its award-winning garden, once home to Swedish physician and author Axel Munthe. You can also spend a good part of the day shopping in the Piazzetta.
The Capri Piazzetta
The Piazzetta has great espresso shops, restaurants, and shopping. In the Piazzetta you can also visit the Centro Caprense Ignazio Cerio to learn about Capri’s history. From the Piazzetta you can also walk to the Hotel Quisisana and along the walk you will find many different luxury shopping stores. This area has beautiful scenery and gardens to view. At the end of the day you can have dinner at one of the many waterfront view restaurants in Capri. The ravioli capresi is the dish that Capri specializes in.
Before you end your day trip in Capri, ramp it up a little by visiting la piazzetta. Here you’ll find less tranquility and more of a big city vibe. This can’t-miss stop will deliver a face full of everybody Italian, rich and poor, working and relaxing. Just take a moment with an espresso and observe, maybe plan your itinerary for your second trip to Capri.
