A Day in Dover
If you are into American history, Dover Tennessee is a great place to investigate. Dover is the location of one of the most historic battles of the Civil War. There are many landmarks you can explore that are full of Civil War history. But beyond the history buffs, Dover is also full of beautiful scenery and has an abundance of wildlife. And if you came hungry, there are plenty of great restaurants to enjoy a delicious meal.
A must see is the battlefield of Fort Donelson where the Union and Confederate soldiers fought in February of 1862. The fort was constructed by Daniel S. Donelson in 1861. The Vision Center has many history filled displays. The battlefield itself has scattered monuments, plaques, and canyons, that portray the actual battle. You will also find areas for picnics and trails to stroll along the Cumberland River.
You can also visit the Fort Donelson National Cemetery which was a burial ground for the Union soldiers killed in a significant way, early in the Civil War battle. Today, you will also find graves of veterans from the Spanish American War, World Wars I and II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War.
There is also the Surrender House/Dover Hotel, Stewart County Visitor Center, and the Stewart County Historical Society Museum which are all filled with history from the Civil War.
More Than Civil War History
If you are into nature and wildlife, a must see is the Cross Creeks National Wildlife Refuge. You will find beautiful scenery along with over 250 species of song birds, shorebirds and waterfowl; a bird lovers paradise. There are also mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians, fish and endangered species like Gray and Indiana Bats, Piping Plover Bird and many more. There is also a Kid’s Corner for hands on activities, a bird Sanctuary, a Wild Turkey Hunting on the refuge, and a kid’s fishing derby. It is a fun filled day.
You can also venture to Fat Daddy’s Resort & Marina, located on shores of the Kentucky Lake. Their Tiki Bar and Restaurant has many raves and great reviews. Dover Tennessee is full of great sites and activities and a great spot for a cozy, country day.
