When to go
Anytime of year is good for visiting Gananoque. It’s north of Toronto and Ottawa, which means it’s not too hot or cold. You can rent a cottage or stay at one of the city’s fine hotels and resorts. Or you can camp out under a million stars at Thousand Islands National Park (best time: September). Whatever you choose, there are plenty of fun things to do with kids and grown-ups alike.
Where to stay in Gananoque
The best place to stay while visiting Gananoque is at one of its many cabins. There are plenty available for rent, and they make an excellent choice if you want to get away from it all. Staying in one of these beautiful locations gives you a chance to enjoy life as it was meant to be enjoyed–away from modern luxuries and devices like TV and computers.
Where to eat
Hula’s on Front Street is hands down one of our favorite places for breakfast, lunch or dinner. If you’re not in a rush and have plenty of time, sit down and enjoy an appetizer or two; we recommend trying out some edamame hummus with homemade pita chips. When it comes to main courses, Hula’s kitchen staff is consistently cranking out some innovative twists on traditional dishes.
Getting to Gananoque
Located just a short drive from Toronto, Gananoque is easily accessible by car or bus. You can catch GO Transit buses all throughout Southern Ontario, including service to and from Ottawa, Kingston and Toronto. The closest major airport is Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport. From there you can rent a car or take shuttles directly to Gananoque.
One of our favorite things about Gananoque is its very un-Canadian lack of crowds and traffic. Though tourists love it for how beautiful it is (and how easily accessible it is by car) we’re just as fond of it for how little tourism has damaged its character.
