River boat cruisers making a stop to Luxembourg City will want to make the most of their visit within a short time frame. Luxembourg City is the capital of Luxembourg and the country’s largest city, is one of the most underrated travel destinations in Europe. If you ever find yourself in Europe, you should definitely consider visiting this beautiful place. Whether you decide to stay there for a day or just visit it as part of a longer trip, Luxembourg City has plenty to offer you and it will be a truly memorable experience! The following are some of my favorite places in Luxembourg City that are not as well-known as other tourist attractions in the city but are definitely worth your time and attention.
If you’re looking for a few architectural gems or you’d like to get in touch with your religious side, Luxembourg City has a handful of sites worth checking out including St. John’s Church, Sacre Coeur Church, and Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin in Luxembourg.
Last, but certainly not least, you may consider taking in a city tour if you’re short on time. The city has walking tours, bus tours and segway tours. You can discover more about tours, sites, and cultural hot spots on the official tourism website lcto.lu
Discover the Luxembourgish cuisine
The cuisine of Luxembourg is rooted in its history. The different influences of its neighbors France, Germany and Belgium have played a prominent role in forming its national dishes over time. Like other cuisines that are heavily influenced by neighboring countries, it is relatively simple and heavily focused on local produce rather than innovation. However, it has a number of signature dishes that deserve to be tried while visiting. Here are some top Luxembourgish recipes
Visit the many museums
Luxembourg is home to a fair share of art and history museums. Some great choices are at Museum Altonaer, dedicated to modern and contemporary art; Musee d’Histoire Luxembourgeoise, which covers all aspects of life in Luxembourg from prehistoric times to present day; and Musée du Général Patton, covering American military history from World War II through present day. Museum buffs won’t want to miss the Natural Museum of History and Art, a center dedicated to notable Luxembourg City artifacts. Don’t miss the museum’s coin cabinet exhibit which houses over 200,000 coins, some of which date back to the Renaissance period. Art fans should visit the Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art. The grand gallery, sometimes referred to as Mudam, is three stories. It includes works from respected artists such as Claude Closky, Thomas Ruff, and Kara Walker.
Explore the city with young people
One of best ways to discover a city and its culture is by spending time with young people that have grown up there. Not only will you get to know better a place, but also those who live there. You might even make some friends for life. Here are five things to do when you visit Luxembourg with young people.
Shop for designer brands on Avenue de la Liberté
It’s known as Avenue de la Liberté for a reason—it’s home to some of Luxembourg’s most prestigious shopping, including top luxury brands like Chanel and Gucci. Whatever your taste, it will be well-represented on this stretch of road. It’s an ideal place to shop if you have deep pockets and plenty of time to spare. (Local tip: Get there before 12 p.m., when many stores are closed.)
Shop at Galeries Lafayette
Founded in 1897, Galeries Lafayette is a huge department store located on Boulevard Wilson. The interior of Galeries Lafayette is truly breathtaking with marble floors and crystal chandeliers hanging from vaulted ceilings. In addition to its beautiful décor, Galeries Lafayette offers quality products for reasonable prices. Additionally, you can enjoy one of their many cooking demonstrations. Don’t miss out on their pâtisserie shop! It has some of best cakes you will ever taste!
