Roatan island in Honduras is a fun cruise destination. It offers something for everyone, both under the water, on the land or in the air. If you want to try things under the water, you can experience some of the largest fish in the seas by swimming with whale sharks. These are gentle giants that you can scuba dive with, touch, and get some great pictures with. It’s one of the few places in the world where you can do this. Personnally, I prefer turtles. Thankfully, there’s plenty of other great a underwater diving to be had on Roatan island. It’s one of the top dive locations in the world.
Roatan Shopping
It’s not much of a shopping destination outside of the port area. You will notice that in the towns there’s a large security presence with a lot of armed guards. Still the locals are generally friendly people and we’ve never had any problem there.
Honduras Wildlife
There’s a lot of a wildlife in the jungle if you want to go do some exploring. There are plenty of monkeys and kinkajous and deer. There are also several places where you can hold a sloth. They are very gentle and freakishly slow moving. The landscape is full of flowers, butterflies and more. If you go up on the hilltop there are some great views of the harbor and you might even find a straw market where you can get some souvenirs or maybe a shot or two of rum.
And for those of you that like to do things above the land, there are lots of opportunities for for zip lining , either down the mountain side or across the bay. If you’re on a cruise ship, you have basically two choices of ports depending on your line. One port has a zip line that goes right across the water. Both are accessible to dive locations or to the Monkey Park or other zip lining opportunities that might be up the hill. You’re going to enjoy your day in Roatan.
