They are easy ways to immerse yourself in island culture without having to go out of your way—or break your budget. Plus, they’re good reminders that wherever you travel, no matter what country or state you visit, people are still people.

Nearby wilderness areas like Katmai National Park and Preserve are home to grizzly bears and brown bears. Adventure like crazy
There’s no shortage of wild stuff to do here in Sitka—kayak with killer whales, fish for halibut and catch a gorgeous sunset. Here are six awesome things you can do on a trip up north that will keep your heart racing and your camera full.
Weather & Planning your trip
With three distinct seasons it is important to know what kind of weather you will be traveling during. Summer months tend to be a little warmer with average highs in the 60’s and lows around 40. Keep in mind when flying into Sitka for your trip that most airlines do not offer direct flights from big cities like Seattle or Los Angeles so factor time into your schedule for layovers.
Getting there
Anchorage’s Ted Stevens International Airport is Sitka’s only international airport, but Sitka itself is not serviced by direct flights. There are a number of ways you can get there; if you live within driving distance (roughly 7 hours) and want to save some money while seeing more of Alaska on your trip, rent a car and drive yourself.
