Strasbourg is just a short distance from the German border, so you will right away notice the blending of cultures in the food and the architecture. As it sits along the Rhine River in France, it is also situated across from Kehl, Germany, which gives Strasbourg French and German influences which can be seen in architecture, culture, cuisine and more. If you want to go across the river, you don’t even have to show your passport at the border.
You should make your way down right away to La Petite France, which is a wonderful old town destination with a medieval feeling and a winding canal. Take a stroll along the canal to digest and take in the beautiful scenery which is a strangely lovely mixture of French and German influence.
As you are strolling you will come on a “must visit” destination, La Cathedral de Notre Dame, which was built in 1439.
Go for a Walk
Much like most French cities, there is an abundance of wonderful park space and this city is no exception. The Jardin de l’Orangerie is a particularly beautiful spot to go for a walk or relax. It was designed by the same person who designed the gardens at Versailles. There is even a little zoo for your entertainment . You may also want to try out the row boats for a romantic afternoon right on the water.
You’ll also notice an abundance of lovely little cafes, bars and restaurants. You can relax and enjoy a meal or a snack, depending upon your appetite. Tarte flambĂ©e (much like pizza) is an all-day-long snack. The best of both French and German street food.
