As a tourist, there is much to do with one day of sightseeing in Wittenberg, Germany. Wittenberg was home to Martin Luther, a Saxon priest, monk and theologian, famous for his work during the Protestant Reformation. Therefore, several popular tourist destinations in Wittenberg have some connection to him.
Go to Church in Wittenberg
Martin Luther’s former residence is now a museum. The Castle Church and the Town Church in particular are must-see stops for tourists. Martin Luther’s grave is inside of The Castle Church. The Town Church is a beautiful piece of medieval architecture, and Martin Luther preached many sermons there. Another famous individual from the Reformation Era is the artist Lucas Cranach. His home, which is now a museum, can also be found in Wittenberg; behind the home you will find his art studio with several exhibits for viewing.
The town of Wittenberg itself is quite suited for tourists, as it is long, flat, and designed for easy walking. Additionally, most of the town is laid out along two parallel streets: Collegienstrasse and Mittelstraase. You will find that most of the popular tourist destinations in Wittenberg are along Collegienstrasse. These streets are lined with buildings that originate in the 16th and 17th centuries, constructed of beautiful pastel colors. You will find many restaurants serving authentic German fare. Make sure to stop at the town’s main square, called Markt, to view the Town Church Towers, as well as statutes of Martin Luther and Philip Melanchthon.
