Nestled in the northern hills of Alabama, is the old-time town of Decatur just north of Birmingham. This small town has everything you’d expect and some things you wouldn’t. There is a little something for everyone. Decatur is home to the Wheeler Wildlife Refuge with several trails to walk and lots of animals to see. It’s a perfect place for a stroll near the river.
After a long walk in the Alabama heat, nearby is Point Mallard Waterpark. This waterpark features a wavepool, lazy river, child play area, and a few slides. It’s reasonable prices and great for families. It’s a great spot to cool off and to relax on a hot day. If staying dry is more your goal, they also have mini-golf.
Enjoy Some History
In a small town like this, you would expect lots of history and Decatur does not disappoint. The Cook Museum of Natural Science is the main museum, but there are several small historical museums to visit. The Blue and Gray Museum of North Alabama showcases an amazing collection of guns, swords, and memorabilia. Right around the corner from the Blue and Gray Museum is The Old State Bank, a historical sight with a few tours to choose from.
As with small towns, you’re bound to find some form of antiquing and there are several shops to pick from in the area. Right along Wilson St is where you will find most of the shopping. The riverfront is a popular area to shop around town and just stroll down the streets. There are several Museums and attractions in this area of town. Closer to West Decatur, Moulton St and 2nd Ave are where you will find the great food and some fun activities. No matter where you head in Decatur, you’re bound to find some adventure.
