Dominican Republic is one half of Hispanola island sharing the other half with the nation of Haiti. It is the second largest Caribbean country after Cuba. The country is home to almost 10 million people with almost 3 million living in the capital city area.
The weather in the Dominican Republic is lovely all year long, but if you want to see their famous mating whales, then you will want to go down sometime between January and March. If you are looking for an outdoor activity that is a bit more active than whale watching, then make sure to check out the small town of Cabarete. Cabarete is the place to be if you want to do any kind of outdoor activity such as kiteboarding or surfing. For something a bit more extreme, check out Ciguapa Falls which offers a great place to hike, as well as 30-foot cliffs surrounded by beautiful deep pools of water.
Dominican Republic History
The island was the landing place of Christopher Columbus on December 5, 1492. The native Taino population quickly died out from disease and the colony of Santo Domingo quickly grew under Bartholomew Columbus’s rule.
Santo Domingo is home to the first fort, church, hospital, school, and plantation in the western hemisphere. The Dominican Republic became an independent nature in 1821.
If you’re looking for something a bit more relaxing to do on your vacation, visit Boca Chica. While you can participate in all sorts of water sports on the island, it is also home to some amazing restaurants serving authentic local cuisine. There are plenty of choices when it comes to golf, horseback riding as well as biking through the pedestrian-only main street which is filled with restaurants and clubs.
