Those who have attended an Indian wedding before or even just seen pictures online, know that it’s a very formal event. However, before the wedding takes place there is the Raas-Garba, which is less formal. Here’s what should be worn if you plan on attending this event.

About The Raas Garba

The Raas Garba differs greatly from the wedding as it’s mostly just about having a good time. Gujarati folk music is played and everyone seems to just find a partner and start dancing with the dandia for Rass. Basically there are only 5 steps that repeat so it’s fairly easy to learn. Garba is done solo in a big circle, but you can join and leave as you see fit.

It’s All About Comfort

It’s almost impossible to enjoy Rass-Garba is you are in formal wear. This is why you need to wear clothes that you are comfortable moving around in. Women should wear a skirt or dress that’s mid-length. It should be loose fitting and not tight or restricting. Men generally will need to wear loose fitting pants and shirts. Basically, if your attire won’t restrict your dancing then it’s probably fine to wear. Another thing that’s important to note is that participants generally dance barefoot. This means that you should leave stockings at home and wear shoes that you can easily get on and off.

As you can see, Rass-Garba is a fun event and your attire should reflect that. No matter what you choose to wear, make sure you pick something that you can easily dance in. Even if you don’t plan on participating, you might end up taking part in all of the festivities when you see just how much fun everyone else is having.
